The culture shock was as shattering to the EU as it must have been surprising. Boris has smashed to pieces the image of the supplicant Brit created by Mrs. May as he forcefully took charge of negotiations. In a dominant style that must have left EU Chiefs reeling, Boris slammed the door shut on any chance we will ever accept the backstop. An hour long verbal punchup on the phone with Leo Varadkar rammed home the same point.
The Mail reports : Boris Johnson laid down the law to Brussels over the Irish backstop last night, demanding it be axed completely from Brexit negotiations.
The Prime Minister told the EU the backstop was ‘simply unviable’ and should be replaced with a new legal commitment to avoid the return of a hard border.
In a forthright letter to European Council president Donald Tusk, Mr Johnson said the backstop was ‘anti-democratic’, unsustainable as the basis for a long-term relationship and put the Good Friday Agreement at risk
Boris is flying to Germany to have dinner with Angela Merkel and he will have lunch with Macron the next day. He will then attend the G7 at Biarritz over the weekend.
A super confident Boris said although EU Chiefs were showing “a little bit of reluctance” he was completely sure they would buckle in the end.
In a take it or leave it letter to Donald Tusk, Boris made the removal of the backstop – which will keep the UK in a customs union and the single market after Brexit until a solution is found to prevent a hard border – a central part of his plans to take the UK out of the EU by Oct 31.
The PM’s objections to the backstop and a copy of his article to Donald Tusk in full from the Telegraph are here.
Our PM has made it plain he is completely convinced the EU will fold, and his attitude is Take it or leave it, we will be out by 31st October, don’t mess with me!
