Theresa May, leader of the Tory party is being investigated by the Cabinet Office for conflict of interest. Her husband Phil is a hedge fund manager.Sources say the Cabinet Office Propriety and Ethics Team have launched an inquiry into whether there is a conflict of interest between Theresa May and her husband, Philip, over his job at the Capital Group, which makes millions of pounds in market sensitive information, including from Brexit.
Byline exclusively reported: “The Cabinet Office Propriety and Ethics Team last month launched an investigation into allegations that the company which employs Philip May, the husband of the Prime Minister as an investment manager could have potentially made large sums of money from Brexit market movements caused by Theresa May’s decisions.”
Later the Cabinet said: “We are also in a period of purdah so this could be a matter for Conservative Central Office”.
Byline then reported: “A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “The Prime Minister has declared in full her interests and the interests of her husband. There is no conflict of interest. ”
This is a tricky situation. The PM is a Remainer, and there has been a lot of anxiety amongst Leavers that May is playing us false. On the other hand, does that mean that having a husband who is a hedge fund manager prohibit a politician from being PM? Obviously not.
There is huge concern from Brexiteers because May is not a negotiator, fears she is hard Remain. She has zero experience, surely is would be much better if a skilled negotiator took over. May has made several gaffes, not only in the area of foreign policy. There were difficulties with Juncker at an EU dinner. It would be best if she withdrew from Brexit negotiations.
