Why Boris Johnson wants Turkey to join the EU

Boris’s strategy on Turkey and the EUBoris Johnson, Mevlut CavusogluThis is Boris Johnson’s strategy to improve our situation with Turkey.
The EU has agreed to give money to Turkey to help with immigration. In return the Turks have agreed they will not allow any more migrants to cross the seas, or drown in flimsy boats.   Immigrants will be allowed to stay in Turkey.

Turkey is looking less and less like a democracy.  But Boris has told the Turks he will help them join the EU. This is the way to wean the Turks towards liberalising their economy, encouraging freedom of speech and keeping their democracy.

Meanwhile Boris is planning a jumbo free trade deal with the Turks. If we cut off Turkey in protest against their policy on free speech, there will be no chance of changing anything. It is vital to discuss the embargo on free speech, so if we have a mutual free trade agreement. this will keep open the channels of communication.

Boris has made it plain, he could not right now belong to an EU that has Turkey as a member. But he does want to help them learn European values.
