If any young Muslim is misguided enough to think that terrorists are glamorous, they received a short sharp reality check today. Boris Johnson was passed a security report on the psychology of jihadis – great to know that psychology is being used to understand the motivation of members of ISIL and Al Qaeda.ITV News reported that Boris Johnson said: “Religious extremists turn to organisations such as Islamic State because they are “not making it with girls and so turn to other forms of spiritual comfort”, London Mayor Boris Johnson has said.
In an interview with the Sun, Mr Johnson said he had looked at an MI5 report into Muslim extremism and concluded young men can turn to such organisations because they are low in self-esteem and want to look like “winners”.
Mr Johnson told the Sun: “If you look at all the psychological profiling about bombers, they typically will look at porn. They are literally w*****s…
“They are tortured. They will be very badly adjusted in their relations with women, and that is a symptom of their feeling of being failure and that the world is against them. They are not making it with girls and so they turn to other forms of spiritual comfort – which of course is no comfort.”
Boris continued: “”They are just young men in desperate need of self-esteem who do not have a particular mission in life, who feel that they are losers and this thing makes them feel strong – like winners. Efforts to tackle radicalisation should come from the Muslim community, said Boris, but possibly the right approach is not being used.”
Not only is Boris giving a powerful argument against radicalisation, he is also giving an insight as to how Muslim communities can turn insecure young Muslims away from terrorism and help them to live happy fulfilled lives. Counselling, how to relate to women as friends and advice on how to positively boost self esteem is the answer.
Boris is not just making fun of terrorists. This is the way of helping alienated, lonely young Muslims, who may turn down the wrong path and seek self affirmation by becoming terrorists. Muslim leaders are not being persuasive in the right way says Boris. As ever, there is a serious message in what the Mayor is saying.
An interesting article in The Times on Boris’s comments is here.
SKY News has just reported that understanding terrorists on a psychological level is vital to dealing with radicalisation. Boris has provided a crucial new dynamic to the terrorist debate.
The Toronto Sun poll firmly backs Boris Johnson’s attitude to terrorism by 81% to 12%. Great article here.
