The Leadership debates

Gladiators, round one. Cleggie nicks a win. The hysteria occasioned by the first of the leadership debates was amazing, as Nick Clegg nipped through the legs of the two main protagonists to reach the finishing tape first.  Absolute mayhem ensued, because nobody had even bothered to think about what he was standing for.  Now that the dust is slightly settling, it is becoming clear there is no cause for alarm, because this is only round one.  One of the best things to emerge from the situation is that a whole new career is beckoning for Mr. Clegg.  He really should take holy orders. gladiators In spite of the vicious denunciations of Mr. Cameron by Labour after the debate, I thought he put in a sensible, workmanlike performance.  He made the mistake though of thinking he was there to give clear, polite answers to the questions, nothing more.  The other two candidates had totally different agendas. Gordon clearly was there to sneer, jeer and make nasty digs at Cameron, while insisting that everything on his watch was hunky dory.  He had a whole raft of new measures to make what was perfect more perfect.  No change there then.

Gordon succeeded more than the other two, in truly being himself.  Nasty, spiteful, petty and partisan.  Cleggers was there to fake sincerity, preach and prove he is the best liar in politics.  Thus spake St. Nick of Cleggus, “Verily, verily I say unto you. “And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.  ~Exodus 23:8 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.  ~Psalms 34:13” and also according to Saint Vince of Cablus: “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.  ~Proverbs 22:7”

An appropriate riposte would be “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Matthew 7.3 ”    King James Bible. Come off it Mr. Clegg!  The Lib Dems were not totally innocent in the expenses scandal, and they have been given money from dubious sources and not paid it back.   The only reason they are less culpable than the bigger parties is because they are so insignificant, they not considered worth bribing.

If you are that pious, go be a choir boy. It needs to be made clear to the electorate exactly what the Lib Dems stand for.  They are very pro-Europe and that is not what most voters want.      Saturday update:  Ken Clarke says a Hung Parliament would cause a run on the pound and we would lose our triple A credit rating.

  1. Clegg talks of the LibDems as an ‘alternative way’ (whatever that means; I often detect vagueness in his speeches, that which counts as nothing but cute & cheap political poetry of sweet nothings!) forward, in comparison to other parties.Well now! While he also speaks of ‘prostituting’ confused & undecided voters in their fancied little ‘red light district’ otherwise known as a hung parliament! Oh, did I mention it has a pimp called Labour? There’s a word that best describes beings like Mr.Clegg-a Hypocrite!!

    • Michie it is always so great to hear from you. I love South Africans for their directness, sarky humour and honesty.

  2. Dawn, yes, Ken Clarke has warned of the serious financial consequences for the UK if there is a Hung Parliament.

Gordon of course now says its fine. Because it is his only chance of hanging on to power. I cannot believe the British people will be so stupid as to sign up for another 5 years of torture under Labour. If the Lib Dems link with Labour, that is what it will be.

  3. Nick Clegg will muck it all up. If there is a Hung Parliament, it will affect the pound and we will lose our triple A credit rating.

If he links with Labour it will be total disaster.

  4. Nic Clegg is so pro-Europe. And if he links up with Labour what are the chances of Clegg being able to assert himself over Gordon Brown, and he will be in the minority. It will just be another 5 years of Gordon Brown, a nightmare all over again.

  5. Most people haven’t a clue what Nick Clegg stands for. It is fine to preach. Look at his policies.
